Fashionista Goes Recession Chic

The Uniform Project combines fashion with the spirit of conservation. Starting in May, Sheena Matheiken pledged to wear one dress for a year, combining it with funky accessories, layers and other hand-me-down and second hand trinkets to make it unique and show that style does not have to come with a high price tag. She calls it an “exercise in sustainable fashion”. I call it inspirational…I’m ready to purge my closet right now. The black dress she will wear for the next year is designed by Eliza Starbuck and is both flattering and convertible to practically any look.

The Project also makes an important statement about “things” and how we all have too many of them – if Sheena can wear the same dress for a year and still look fabulous, maybe it’s time for all of us to rethink the amount of material possessions we really need.

If you’re inspired by this, there are also instructions on the site for how to donate old accessories or jewelry you’ve designed to help spice up the outfits for the next ten months. In addition, money can be donated to the project, which will be donated to help educate children in the slums of India through the Akanksha Foundation.
