The American Heritage Dictionary defines equity as "the state, quality, or ideal of being just, impartial or fair." In legal spheres, "equity" also carries the meaning of a system based on conscience or natural justice, serving to supplement and remedy the limitations and the inflexibility of the common law. The struggle for equity can define the scope of many human endeavors, and this struggle is often waged in the face of established powers that would deny its subjects autonomy and self-determination. Artists Hung Liu, Rajkamal Kahlon, and Taryn Simon, for example, explore occurances of extreme, institutionalized injustice, and call for a reappraisal of systems of justice as officially administered.
